Dry Tammerkoski Riverbed in Tampere Sparks Wild Threads Theories
Tammerkoski in Tampere was drained for maintenance and inspection; city crews plan to begin refilling the rapids on Sunday at 18:00 if work stays on schedule.
Tampere's Tammerkoski ran dry on Monday for maintenance and inspection. City crews plan to begin refilling the rapids on Sunday at 18:00 if work proceeds on schedule, Tamperelainen reported.
The exposed riverbed drew visitors and a wave of humorous explanations on social media, from “my teen went to shower” to jokes about swapping the water, counting the rapids' litres, building underground parking, rerouting a tram line or even freezing a new rink for Ilves. Some people came simply to look.
Visitor Pirita Susi said she and a friend went for evening coffee and found the channel turned into a crater, with three teenage boys and a sad-looking seagull on the riverbed. A photo of a tanker labelled “water” parked beside the dry rapids also circulated online.
Tampereen Energia warned that walking on the emptied riverbed is unsafe and not allowed. The temporary drawdown followed an earlier notice by the city that it would allow hydropower maintenance the city's earlier notice. The rapids have been emptied before for short-term construction work, such as during the temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge built this summer temporary bridge works.
