Tammerkoski has been drained for a week of maintenance and inspections, leaving the exposed riverbed off-limits while hydropower machinery, gates and river structures are serviced.

The exposed riverbed of Tammerkoski is off-limits after water was drained for a week of maintenance and inspections beginning Monday.

The drainage was first announced earlier this week when officials said the work would start Monday and refilling was planned for around Aug 30.

Work began early Monday, with an excavator operating before 9 a.m. between Satakunnansilta and Valssipadonraitin.

Tampereen Energia is servicing the Keskikoski, Finlayson and Tampella hydroelectric machines and waterways, building maintenance platforms on Palatsinraitti, and taking measurements at the Keskikoski plant.

Partner organisations, including Tampereen Vesi, Koskienergia, Ramboll Finland, ARE, Metsä Board Oyj Tako and Tampereen Kiinteistö Invest / Caverion, are handling a range of tasks. They will service water machinery and gates, close the waterway to the Tako factory, carry out condition and ground surveys, repair retaining walls, and inspect cooling systems, submerged water pipes and sewers.

The works are expected to last about a week. Refilling is scheduled to begin on Sunday evening, 30 August at 18:00 if the timetable holds.

Weather could change the schedule; crews have released extra water from Näsijärvi as a precaution.

Kimmo Koivisto, production economics manager at Tampereen Energia, warned that with no flow and active works the riverbed and worksite are not safe for members of the public.
