Tammerkoski to be drained starting Monday for hydropower maintenance
Tammerkoski will be drained from 7 a.m. Monday after flows stop Sunday, Aug 23, to allow maintenance on hydropower plants and riverbed work; refilling is planned around Aug 30.
Workers from several companies will carry out maintenance as Tammerkoski is emptied from 7 a.m. on Monday, after flows are halted on Sunday, August 23, according to Tamperelainen. The work follows an earlier June draining, when a temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge was built across Tammerkoski to allow piling work on the riverbed the June draining and temporary bridge installation.
Tampereen Energia will service the Keskikoski, Finlayson and Tampella hydropower plants, build maintenance platforms at Palatsinraitti and take measurements at Keskikoski. Other participants, including Tampereen Vesi, Koskienergia, Ramboll Finland, ARE, Metsä Board's Tako unit and Tampereen Kiinteistö Invest / Caverion, will perform gate and turbine servicing, close the waterway to the Tako factory and carry out condition and seabed surveys. They will repair retaining walls and inspect cooling systems, pipes and sewers on the exposed riverbed.
The work is expected to last about a week, with refilling planned to begin Sunday evening, August 30 at 18:00 if the schedule holds. Kimmo Koivisto of Tampereen Energia warns the dry riverbed and work zones are not safe for the public. Weather may alter the timetable; organisers say they have increased releases from Näsijärvi as a contingency.
