Surplus food retailer Fiksuruoka will open its first Tampere store at the Ratina shopping centre on Saturday 7 November.

Surplus food retailer Fiksuruoka will open its first Tampere store at the Ratina shopping centre on Saturday 7 November, Tamperelainen reports. The opening was first announced in September when the chain said it would open a Tampere shop at Ratina.

The chain was founded in 2016 and is based in Espoo. It already runs physical shops in Espoo’s Lippulaiva, Helsinki, Vantaa and Turku, and plans to open one later in Hyvinkää. Fiksuruoka began online but has moved into brick-and-mortar retail. CEO Juhani Järvensivu said in a company statement that physical stores proved an "exceptionally effective growth engine," and that the mix of affordability, responsibility and a varied, often surprising selection has resonated with consumers.

Järvensivu expects the company’s stores to account for roughly half of all sales by the end of the year. The Tampere shop will sell changing batches of surplus products. These range from dry goods to chilled and frozen items, and mild alcoholic beverages. The company says it has already helped save more than 23 million kilos of food from being wasted. Fiksuruoka also operates internationally under the name Foodello in the Netherlands and Belgium.
