Frank The Lobster Brings Tampere Band Culture Back to Life

Frank The Lobster opened last year in the space that formerly housed Goldie’s, expanding with two adjacent units to form roughly a 300-square-metre bar with 225 seats. The new venue blends a bar, a karaoke setup and a live music stage. On the expanded side, blue walls and themed decor set the tone, including wall paintings of Janis Joplin and Marlon Brando. The playlist favors rock and pop from the 1970s to 2000s rather than hip-hop, and the room includes a balcony for extra seating. The operation is led by Louie So, Samuli Hyvärinen, Olli Vilppola and Teemu Vilppola, who are well known from Tampere’s nightlife. Tamperelainen notes that the bar aims to nurture Tampere’s band culture through events like Frank´s Music Challenge, a competition open to solo artists and bands. The format features rotating lineups with 3–4 acts per heat, finalists chosen by both judges and the audience. The venue pledges low barriers to live music with no entry or cloakroom fees, and it plans to keep a diverse crowd by offering affordable drinks and a casual environment. The club also mentions plans for a summer terrace on its inner courtyard and situates itself among a busy cluster of downtown bars along Hämeenkatu.
