Frost and Black Ice Make Roads Treacherous Across Finland, Causing Multiple Crashes
Frost and black ice have made roads across Finland treacherous, causing several accidents including at least five in Pirkanmaa and a collision between a conscript bus and a car in Kankaanpää.
Frost and black ice are making roads treacherous across much of Finland, and several traffic accidents have already been reported. At least five crashes occurred in Pirkanmaa. A collision in Kankaanpää involved a bus carrying conscripts and a private car, meteorologist Anne Borgström of YLE said on Friday.
Temperatures fell below freezing across almost the whole country on Friday night. Light frost is likely again Saturday night, and drivers were warned to take care. Borgström cautioned that official forecasts measure temperature at two metres above ground, while road surfaces can be noticeably colder. "Remember that at the same time the ground surface can be significantly colder," she said.
Frost-related black ice is most likely in western areas, while the country’s northwestern arm may see snow or sleet affecting traffic. The warning follows an earlier forecast that sleet and slippery roads were possible in Tampere mid‑next week the mid‑week sleet warning and a separate two‑car collision in Sastamala linked to icy conditions the Sastamala collision.
