Hatanpää one-way streets and bus detours begin May 18 as Viinikanlahti rebuild continues
From May 18 Hatanpään Puistokuja will be one-way toward the Arboretum and buses will detour as demolition and rebuilding at the Viinikanlahti waterfront continue; a new pedestrian-and-cycle bridge is due by the end of June.
Commuters and residents around Hatanpää should expect one-way streets, bus detours and increased truck traffic this summer as demolition and rebuilding reshape the Viinikanlahti waterfront.
From May 18 Hatanpään Puistokuja will be one-way toward the Arboretum between Hatanpään valtatie and Hatanpäänkatu; the arrangement is expected to last until the end of July. Buses will no longer run along Puistokuja — they will turn at Hatanpäänkatu and use a temporary stop in the Tays Hatanpään rintaklinikka parking area. The city is carrying out a street renovation that will replace wooden walkways, level the road, install stormwater lines and add bike lanes on both sides of the carriageway. Resurfacing work is due to finish in October–November 2026, with planting and other green works scheduled for spring 2027.
Demolition of the former wastewater treatment plant began in March and is being carried out from the north; teardown and material handling will continue until the end of 2027, the city says. To keep people moving past the many active sites, the city is building the Vesitehtaansilta pedestrian and cycle bridge over Viinikanoja to link the Viinikanlahti shore paths. The bridge is slated for completion by the end of June.
Residents should expect intermittent noise and increased truck traffic on weekdays from 07:00 to 20:00 while the area is prepared for a new district planned for roughly 3,000 residents.
