Hervanta Bypass Gets New Pedestrian and Bicycle Route

Arkkitehdinkadun bicycle lane and sidewalk planning is approved as a parallel project to Hervannan valtaväylä, to be built together with the eastern-edge route. The plan specifies a unified pedestrian and cycling main route along the Hervanta bypass from the Näyttämönkatu/Arkkitehdinkatu intersection to Hermiankadulle, and on the north side of Arkkitehdinkatu a sidewalk will be added for the stretch between Insinöörinkatu and the bypass. Implementing the layout requires a new underpass beside the Hermian underpass, with a concrete bridge built in a similar style, and the Näyttämönkatu side will convert the narrow combined walkways and bike lanes into separate pedestrian paths, with bike traffic joining the roadway. Draft street plan drawings were on display in December 2025, and after viewing some changes were made, including rerouting the bike path over Hermiankatu and adjustments to signage and lampposts. Tree plantings were added on the western side of the Hervanta bypass between the road and verge, and notes were added about the invasive giant hogweed. The total cost for the Hervanta bypass project is around 1,587,600 euros, with road construction about 853,600, Hermian underpass about 548,600, and stormwater works about 185,300. Arkkitehdinkadun project totals around 114,200, with road works about 103,400 and stormwater about 10,800. The projects are included in Tampere city environment service area's 2027 annual plan, and construction is planned to start in spring 2027.
