Hidden Damage, Asbestos Work Push Rellun Renovation to €20.4M
Unexpected structural damage and extra asbestos removal at Tampereen lyseon lukio (Rellun) raised the final renovation cost to €20.4 million, €1.2 million higher than estimated, and extended the work by five weeks.
Surprises uncovered during demolition extended the renovation by five weeks. The refurbishment of Tampereen lyseon lukio (Rellun) in the Pyynikintori area concluded with a final cost of €20.4 million, €1.2 million higher than originally estimated, according to Tamperelainen.
Workers uncovered severely deteriorated structural elements and organic material beneath surface layers, forcing larger-scale demolition and more extensive asbestos removal than planned. The problems added both time and expense, including extra storage and site operating costs.
The overhaul upgraded facilities for about 650 students, improved accessibility and energy efficiency and opened basement and attic spaces. The courtyard was renewed and a green-roofed sports equipment storage added, all while respecting the site's protected cultural values.
The city board will review the project's final account at its Monday meeting.
