Weak concrete boosts Hatanpää School renovation cost by €2.06 million, delays completion to September 2028
Weak concrete found at Hatanpää School has pushed the renovation cost up by €2.06 million and could delay completion by four months, to September 2028.
Late September tests found weak concrete in load-bearing pillars of the school's A and B wings, Tamperelainen reported. Laboratory analysis showed the concrete was crumbling and had low, highly variable compressive strength, which forced engineers to widen inspections to the entire building while they await results for beams and floor slabs.
The extra structural work is estimated at €2,060,000. It covers further testing, redesign and construction work, temporary shoring of the frame, weather protection and costs tied to the longer schedule. The project team has proposed a four-month extension that would push completion to September 2028.
The renovation budget has been revised from €21,590,000 to €23,650,000. The additional expense comes as the city has been prioritising school and day‑care construction in its 2027 budget reviewed in September and as the Housing and Real Estate Committee recently reviewed allocations that include €113.6m for schools and day‑care projects this year.
At next week's meeting the Housing and Real Estate Committee will consider whether to recommend the city board approve the extra funding.
