Tamperelainen reports that J. Karjalainen made about 15–20 short films as a child and teenager for the children's TV series Minikino, which was filmed at Yle's Tampere studios in the 1970s. That detail is revealed in Pekka Ruissalo's unauthorized biography, J. Karjalaisesta – Vuosi vuodelta.
The book describes how Karjalainen and a friend, Timo Soija, produced Sunday-morning short films for Minikino that were often action-packed and dramatic.
Minikino originally aired on TV2 from February 1970 to September 1971 and returned in 1976–77. The show invited 10–14-year-olds to submit scripts; selected teams received an 8mm film camera, film stock and lights, and some were brought into the studio to screen and discuss their work. It was very hands-on.
