Metso Central Library celebrates 40th anniversary with week of free events and public book marathon

Metso Central Library in Tampere will kick off a week of free events to mark its 40th anniversary beginning Saturday, 3 October. Events range from architecture talks to a public book marathon.

Opened in autumn 1986, Metso has welcomed about 45 million visitors and loaned more than 80 million items over four decades. The building's distinctive architecture remains intact even as services have evolved. Library services director Niina Salmenkangas says the building's details still delight both first-time visitors and regulars.

The programme starts on 3 October with an architecture day and a discussion on the library's work environment. On 4 October there is an open day for bookmobiles in Hämeenpuisto. On 6 October a book marathon will feature locals presenting favourite titles. It will conclude with an evening appearance by author Juha Itkonen.

Organisers will screen the documentary The Librarians and host a panel on freedom of speech on 8 October. The festivities close on 10 October with music, dance and birthday cake.

An exhibition in the basement documenting the library's planning and construction runs from 3 October to 27 December. Digital displays will show images from across the decades. Local paper Tamperelainen provided the programme details. All events are free.
