A mosquito repellent started a terrace fire at a Parkano cottage in early June, prompting insurer Lähitapiola Pirkanmaa to warn that smoke-based repellents and torches can ignite summer homes.

A mosquito repellent ignited and set a Parkano cottage terrace on fire in early June, a blaze that prompted Lähitapiola Pirkanmaa to warn that such products can burn summer homes, Tamperelainen reports.

Research and authority data show many traditional products carry a real fire risk. Mosquito coils and other smoke-based repellents, for example, burn by glowing and produce smoke. Antti Määttänen, Lähitapiola Pirkanmaa’s claims director, says smoke-based products create a fire hazard and calls outdoor torches "a very bad idea on terraces." Media reports identified a liquefied petroleum gas device as the cause of the most recent Pirkanmaa incident.

Health risks are another concern. Peer-reviewed studies show burning coils produce high concentrations of fine particles and can worsen respiratory symptoms. Finland's Safety and Chemicals Agency Tukes says many insect-repellent products are biocides subject to specific safety rules. WHO and other health authorities recommend DEET- or picaridin-based skin repellents, protective clothing and mosquito nets as the safest options. Määttänen suggests a natural alternative: put up bird boxes to attract spotted flycatchers before Midsummer, which can help reduce local mosquito numbers.

The warning follows the lead fire inspector's recent warning that urged Tampere-area residents to avoid balcony barbecues and other open flames and to use electric grills when possible.
