Children and other road users frequently ignore traffic rules around Hatanpään valtatie and Pirkankatu, creating near-daily dangerous situations for buses and pedestrians, Tamperelainen reports.
Jani Mäki has driven larger vehicles for 29 years and now operates Nysse lines including routes 7, 8 and 16. He says online advice from professional drivers often draws pushback, but reflects real safety concerns. He does not claim to be better than others, yet repeated misunderstandings about basic rules lead to risky moments.
Common problems include children left standing on tram tracks when a crossing light turns red and drivers cutting sharply in front of buses. Pedestrians who begin crossing on green must complete the crossing, and drivers must wait until it is clear.
A frequent misconception is that buses leaving stops only need to be yielded to in built-up areas. In reality the law requires yielding on roads with speed limits of 60 km/h or lower. Cutting into bus lanes or forcing buses to brake suddenly can endanger wheelchair users, people with prams and other passengers.
Previous reporting found parking blocking bus lanes prompted city action leading to a planned parking ban on Luhtaankatu, and mobile speed sign data revealed widespread speeding near schools speeding near schools. Both findings underscore how traffic behaviour around schools and bus routes can create hazards for children.
