Nokian Tyres Unveils Auto-Adapting Winter Tire

ction Stud technology to adjust grip as temperatures shift, with studs switching automatically between ON and OFF The company says the new tire is designed for passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs, and that Paolo Pompei, Nokian Renkaat’s CEO, calls it one of the firm’s most significant innovations since the winter tire concept was created more than 90 years ago. Development began in 2014 with the idea of retractable studs, and thousands of prototypes have been tested in laboratories, on city streets, and under extreme conditions at Ivalo’s White Hell and Spain’s Hakka Ring test centers. The tread mixture includes renewable materials such as natural rubber, bio-resins and bio-based oils like pine resin and rapeseed oil. The Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 01 line will be available to consumers in autumn 2026 and is manufactured at Nokian Renkaat’s Finnish factory in Nokia.
