Nysse renames 'plusbus' to Finnish 'plusbussi' after language authority ruling
Nysse has quietly changed the name it selected in spring from "plusbus" to the Finnish-form "plusbussi" after the Institute for the Languages of Finland ruled that "plusbus is not Finnish."
The Institute for the Languages of Finland concluded in April that "plusbus is not Finnish", according to Aamulehti. To comply with the ruling, Nysse quietly changed the spring-selected name from plusbus to the Finnish-form plusbussi.
Hanne Tamminen, Nysse's communications planner, said the management group decided after a review that the change was minor. "Plusbus" had been perceived as an English name; the team concluded that "plusbussi" would be clearer in communications and would allow Nysse to follow the Language Act and the institute's recommendation.
The operator now writes plusbussi in lowercase as a common-service name rather than as a brand. The electric articulated "superbuses" are due to start operating in Tampere in August 2028 on lines 7 and 8. The procurement restart follows reporting that a lack of suitable superbuses forced a restart of the Line 7 tender last month’s tender restart, and earlier planning work approved upgrades at 191 stops for the Plusbus routes as part of the 2028 rollout plan.
