Study greenlights upgrades at 191 stops for Tampere's Plusbus routes 7 and 8

According to the City of Tampere, longer electric articulated buses will serve Tampere's new Plusbus routes, requiring upgrades at 191 stops along the lines. The city's urban committee approved a study on 14 April 2026 to guide detailed planning ahead of the Plusbus launch in August 2028.

The study maps needs against current stops and earlier plans, splitting actions into urgent changes to be completed before the service starts and later improvements to be handled as larger street projects. Some changes are immediate; others will wait for broader reconstruction work. Line 8 will run between Haukiluoma and Annala and line 7 between Tesoma and Linnainmaa; of the 191 stops, 42 are shared, 77 serve line 7 and 72 serve line 8.

Planned measures include stop relocations, consolidations and removals. Physical upgrades cover renewing and lengthening bus bays, reshaping approach ramps and converting some stops to curbside boarding, plus adding tactile strips, waiting shelters and timetable displays. The plans also foresee moving bike lanes behind shelters, completing missing pedestrian links and fixing unsafe crosswalks.

Committee members attached a unanimous amendment requiring planners to reconcile the new buses' stop needs with reliable timetables, pedestrian and cycling safety and accessibility, and the functioning of the street network. Planners will prioritise cost-effective targeted measures and prepare larger redesigns as separate street projects. Roughly a third of stop upgrades will be scheduled to coincide with broader street construction so critical works are ready before August 2028.
