Nysse unveils draft 2028 network focusing on tram trunk lines and new feeder buses
Nysse has published a draft 2028 public transport network prioritising tram trunk lines and feeder buses, building on an earlier overhaul proposal and outlining planning across Tampere and nearby municipalities.
According to ePressi, the draft builds on the broader 2028 overhaul Nysse announced earlier this year which proposed tram and superbus core lines and set final decisions for the end of 2026.
Work in 2026 will focus on Tampere, Pirkkala and northern Lempäälä, while 2027 planning will extend to Ylöjärvi, Nokia, Kangasala and Orivesi. The public transport committee approved the project's objectives in March 2026 and reviewed the route draft on 26 August 2026.
At the heart of the proposal is a frequent trunk network built around tram and plus-bus corridors. An expert group has outlined capacity solutions for two tram lines: line 1 from Ruotula to Lentävänniemi, and line 3 from Hervantajärvi via Hatanpää to Härmälä and Partola. Feeder buses will connect neighbourhoods outside the tram catchment, linking Kauppi campus, Hiedanranta and Partola to the trunk network.
Buses would include trunk lines 2–10 with short headways and long operating hours, serving major suburbs and offering direct links to the city centre. Regional main lines 40, 50, 70 and 80 would continue to connect Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia and Ylöjärvi with Tampere. More frequent departures are expected for many neighbourhoods.
Leena Huhtala, a public transport planner, said the work aims to match the largest passenger flows and improve the functionality of travel chains. "Changes to the trunk lines will provide top-level public transport to more residents, and the new feeder lines will bring more frequent departures to areas left outside the tram network," she said.
