Nyssen launches 2028 Tampere transit overhaul

Nyssen announced that Tampere region's public transport will undergo a major timetable overhaul, effective August 7, 2028, introducing superbus lines 7 and 8, expanding the tram from Sorin Square to Partola, and ending several Nyssen operating contracts. The update aims to unify tram, superbus, and other bus services into a single, coordinated network across the Tampere area, with emphasis on South Tampere and Pirkkala.

The plan covers the entire Tampere region, but the focus is on South Tampere and Pirkkala. Planning is to be carried out with broad citizen participation, including surveys and events. A comprehensive data foundation will be built from passenger and resident numbers, job locations, and mobility needs to shape the timetable reform.

Joukkoliikennesuunnittelija Leena Huhtala notes that earlier line-up changes have shown increased usage where services are developed. She adds that Nyssen's values — easy, carefree, renewing, developing, impactful, and responsible — guide the timetable design, and that customer feedback and participation help create a network residents can embrace.

The planning process will begin in spring, with a draft timetable published for resident comment in early autumn. Final decisions are expected by the end of 2026, and the new timetable will be put into operation in August 2028. Nyssen line planners will be available in Tampere evenings at three locations: Peltolammi on 31 March 2026, Nekala on 15 April 2026, and Kaukajärvi on 29 April 2026, each from 17:00 to 19:00.
