Police Evacuate Pyynikki Beach After Dangerous Fireworks Spark Disorder
Police ordered thousands to leave Pyynikki and Rosendahl beaches on Saturday after dangerous fireworks and widespread disorder during end-of-summer Venetian night celebrations.
Aamulehti reports that police ordered thousands to leave Pyynikki beach on Saturday after dangerous fireworks and widespread disorder. The disturbances erupted at Rosendahl and Pyynikki shores in Tampere during the evening.
The traditional end-of-summer Venetian night celebrations drew an unusually large crowd of mainly young people. It got out of hand. Officers stepped in over substance use, behaviour that endangered public safety and the highly dangerous use of fireworks, and a dispersal order was issued at about 10 p.m.
Aamulehti recalled that the event has strained police resources in previous years: in 2023 fireworks were fired toward people at the same shore and two minors were stabbed. It urged city authorities and police to plan better for next year, suggested limiting fireworks to professionals if misuse persists, and said parents should set clearer boundaries for underage evening gatherings to keep the celebrations safe for everyone.
