Thousands Dispersed as Police Break Up Pyynikki Beach Youth Party

Several thousand young people gathered at Pyynikki Beach on Saturday evening, local paper Tamperelainen reported, before police moved in to disperse the crowd. Officers acted after reports of widespread alcohol and drug use and behaviour that endangered public order and safety. Fireworks were used in particularly dangerous ways, the police said. Multiple patrol units responded, and officers ordered the crowd to disperse, with the gathering ending at 10 PM. Five young people were taken into custody for intoxication and disorderly conduct. One is suspected of resisting an official. The action follows earlier efforts this spring to boost visible patrols and target youth alcohol and safety in central Tampere when police increased city-centre patrols.
