Prisma Expansion in Lielahti Proposes Underground Roundabout Option
A zoning amendment proposal filed 28 April 2026 would allow the Prisma hypermarket in Lielahti to expand onto adjacent parking and city-owned street land, increasing total gross floor area to about 26,000 m²; the plan also reserves space for an optional underground roundabout.
According to the City of Tampere, a zoning amendment proposal submitted on 28 April 2026 would allow the Lielahti hypermarket complex on Lielahdenkatu to expand onto adjacent parking and city-owned street land, boosting total gross floor area to about 26,000 square metres.
The one-storey Prisma, built in 2011, currently covers roughly 17,150 square metres. Applicants Pirkanmaan Osuuskauppa and Lielahtikeskus are seeking about 9,000 square metres of additional building rights.
The design emphasises green construction, stormwater retention and improved façades. It also requires planting a new row of trees on the Prisma side to compensate for trees removed when the street is widened and to meet a higher green coefficient.
Two draft options were shown late last year. The chosen proposal reserves space for a possible underground roundabout; traffic studies suggest it would improve overall flow as a planned tram line and lane changes alter vehicle movements. The roundabout would be optional.
The plan is intended to support infill development and the area's shift toward a mixed-use services and jobs hub, and higher customer numbers should benefit nearby businesses. The proposal will move to the urban planning committee after a public display and feedback period.
