Public feedback sought for Kauppi–Niihama trail upgrades

The City of Tampere says an online survey open from 10 August to 4 September 2026 invites residents and visitors to comment on planned Kauppi‑Niihama hiking trails.

The survey follows the city's June announcement to upgrade outdoor recreation services and trails in Kauppi–Niihama. The trails are being planned alongside work on a nature reserve, with the aim of preserving the area's natural values while improving access. Most routes would use existing paths and be shared-use, and some would be suitable for mountain biking. A few new rest areas are proposed, including accessible sites by Lake Näsijärvi, at Niihama Outdoor Lodge and around Alasjärvi. Marking the routes is intended to concentrate visitor movement, reduce terrain wear and ease conflicts between user groups as new housing and the nearby tram line increase pressure on the area.

The interactive survey lets users pin suggestions on a map, rate current trails and rest spots and leave open comments. It is available in Finnish and English. Completing it takes about 5–10 minutes. EcoFellows planner Kaisa Mikkola said planners have already gathered views from equestrians, water skiers, Tampere University Hospital staff and local allotment gardeners, and will meet dog owners, disc golfers and other groups. Results will be published in autumn 2026, and residents can speak with the team at an EcoFellows stand during the Taidemetsä Festival on 29 August at Niihama Outdoor Lodge.
