Pyynikin Kapteeni residents publish 73-page history to mark 20th anniversary
Residents of the Pyynikin Kapteeni housing company in Kaakinmaa have marked the building's 20th anniversary with a 73-page history booklet compiled by long-time resident Olavi Toivola.
The booklet, compiled by long-time resident and writer Olavi Toivola who has lived in the building since it opened in 2006, will be distributed to all 43 apartments and is not for sale. It traces the building's two-decade history and the wider Kaakinmaa neighbourhood, noting that the site once housed the Pyynikki Brewery's bottling plant and warehouse.
Toivola, who served as the housing company's early board chair, began collecting archival material years ago to assemble the history. Turnover has been low: 27 of the original 2006 occupants still live in the building.
He highlights the value of early strategic planning, which kept renovation funds ready and helped the community remain debt-free. Recent upgrades include yard repairs and fixes for moisture problems.
Surveillance cameras were added after a 2024 stabbing at the Papinkatu and Tiiliruukinkatu intersection prompted a police investigation.
He is an active local author. His previous works include a 2005 history of Nokian Paper and a 2026 crime novel. He also drew on Pekka Kuusela's Juuret Kaakinmaassa while researching Kaakinmaa's past.
