This fall Tampere will add temporary 20 km/h road markings, larger traffic signs, speed bumps and a short road narrowing in Ranta-Tampella to improve pedestrian and cycling safety during Horisonttiaukio construction.

Road speeds will be reduced and crosswalks made more visible in Ranta-Tampella this fall as Horisonttiaukio construction begins in early September. The project will run in phases into spring 2027.

The measures accompany construction at Horisonttiaukio. Work will replace the roundabout with a T-junction and proceed in phases into spring 2027 as previously outlined by the city.

Crews will paint 20 km/h markings on the roadway, replace small signs with larger standard traffic signs and install temporary speed bumps on both sides of the Aspinniemenkatu junction crosswalk. Missing crosswalk signs required by the approved street plan will also be put in place, and a temporary road narrowing will be built near Kiiskisaarenpuisto for the duration of the Horisonttiaukio work.

Officials will monitor traffic flow, driving speeds and pedestrian and cycling safety during construction and after completion, and will evaluate any need for additional measures based on that monitoring. The City of Tampere thanked local residents for active feedback that helped shape the safety improvements.
