A surprise Democratic landslide in the U.S. midterm elections drew relief and celebration from Americans living in Finland, from students to long-time expats in cities including Tampere, Oulu and Espoo.

Democrats scored a surprise landslide in the U.S. midterm elections, prompting relief and celebration among Americans living in Finland, according to YLE.

Students and long-time expats, from Tennessee to Tampere, said the result feels like a chance to reverse recent rollbacks of rights and policy. In Oulu, education master's student Emily Lewis said she did not expect such a strong showing and welcomed the election of the country’s first Black female governor and its first Indigenous female governor. She added the outcome probably won't change her daily life in Finland but called it "a good day to be a proud American."

Tampere resident and dual citizen Päivi Julkunen said she was surprised by the scale of the victory and that she had voted in the midterms. She said the result signals voter dissatisfaction and predicted President Donald Trump may become a lame duck, focusing more on foreign policy or even turning into an "angry duck."

In Espoo, Dana Freling, who founded Democrats Abroad Finland and has lived in Finland for more than 30 years, said the result was better than expected. She said it reflected frustration with rising costs, chaos and political scheming, and warned the new Congress will face work that affects people worldwide, including possible efforts to repeal recent tariffs that have strained trade with allies such as Canada.
