Survey: Tampere’s cultural scene staged 8,000 events in 2024 but lacks stable funding
A City of Tampere study finds grant-supported cultural groups staged over 8,000 public events in 2024 with nearly 1.5 million visits, but artists say the sector needs more predictable funding and affordable spaces.
A study compiled for the City of Tampere from surveys, research and statistics gathered between 2022 and 2025 maps the sector’s state, development needs and municipal support. Grant-supported cultural groups in Tampere staged over 8,000 public events in 2024, drawing nearly 1.5 million visits.
Regular activities engaged more than 97,000 participants. The report describes a skilled, collaborative field that is reaching new audiences and forming partnerships.
"Tampere has an exceptionally lively cultural scene, and that shows in the city's appeal. We value creators' work and want them to have good conditions to do it here," said Deputy Mayor for Education and Cultural Services Anne‑Mari Jussila.
Artists and organisations told the city they need more predictable funding horizons than single‑year grants, affordable rehearsal, work and performance spaces, and support with grant applications, marketing and organisational development.
City officials highlighted recent investments such as the Nekala cultural centre, planned cultural spaces in Hiedanranta, the Kulttuuripankki online service and expanded advisory, networking and training services as steps to help.
The study follows earlier support measures and consultations, including the council's March decision to approve nearly €3.0 million in grants for arts organisations the city's March grant decision and a September public survey that gathered residents' views on cultural services a September online survey.
"The study brings together what cultural actors consider important. It gives us a good basis to continue the discussion with the field," said Head of Cultural Services Marianna Lehtinen. The full report is available as a PDF.
