Tampere adds about 60 city bike stations as network tops 170 stops

Tampere relaunched its city bike season on Wednesday, opening about 60 new stations in the city centre and Kaleva, according to YLE.

The additions push the network past 170 stops while access prices remain unchanged. New stations have been placed beside existing bike parking and other suitable locations across the city, including Hervanta, Nekala, Linnainmaa, Lielahti and Lentävänniemi. They already appear in the Tampere City Bikes app and Nysse's route planner.

“A denser station network makes journeys more flexible and smoother because both departure and arrival points are closer,” says Tampere traffic planner Jukka Uusitalo.

A new parking rule now allows city bikes to be left in ordinary bike racks alongside private bicycles; the system uses a GPS geofence and was cheap to implement. Planners expect some crowding at busy racks but say current capacity will mostly cope; they will monitor usage and react if needed.

Tampere operates about 700 city bikes. Maintenance is handled by Sarka, and Uusitalo says only one or two bikes have gone missing.

The city is preparing a competitive tender built around the denser station network. Officials note that Turku gets higher usage with the same number of bikes spread across roughly 250 stations.
