Tampere Coffee Week runs Oct. 1–11, featuring 18 cafes across Tampere, Kangasala and Akaa, five roasters, guided tastings, competitions and a stamp card that gives a free drink every fifth stamp.
Jani Tikka is launching the third annual Tampere Coffee Week from October 1 to 11, showcasing 18 cafes in Tampere, Kangasala and Akaa alongside five small roasters, Tamperelainen reports.
Tikka is a designer in the software sector and does not own a cafe. A friend opened his eyes to the wider world of specialty coffee and inspired him to start the event after he saw a similar gathering in Helsinki. He organised the first edition with Pekka Heinonen and Pirkanmaan Paahtimo. It has grown each year.
This year the festival will include guided tastings, competitions, a T-shirt launch and a stamp card that awards a free drink every fifth stamp. The week opens at Ratina shopping centre on International Coffee Day, October 1. Five roasters will offer samples there.
Tikka hopes the initiative will encourage locals to discover new favourite spots and help independent cafes that he says are being squeezed by large chains. "I realised that coffee is much more multifaceted than I had thought," he says, and he believes side-by-side tastings often surprise people with how varied coffee flavours can be.
