Tampere Extends Stops for 47-metre Trams This Spring
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy will extend three tram stops Koskipuisto, Tulli, and Hervantakeskus to accommodate 47-metre trams, with works set to begin mid-April and finish by the end of September, Tamperelainen reports.
An accompanying Tampereen Raitiotie Oy press release notes that the work will be staged to minimize disruption to tram travel, and that passengers will still be able to board during all phases, although access to the stops may be temporarily adjusted. Koskipuisto and Hervantakeskus stops may be out for up to two months, while Tulli is expected to be out for about a month. Contractors may perform the modifications concurrently or one by one, with a more precise timetable to be announced in spring.
Currently Tampere runs 33 stop pairs for 37-metre trams, excluding three stops that will be updated for 47-metre vehicles; all stops on the extended Pirkkala–Linnainmaa section will be built to accommodate longer trams. The first extended 47-metre tram will undergo testing in the summer, and when the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa line opens in the summer of 2028, Tampere aims to have 19 extended and 16 standard-length trams.
According to Aamulehti, longer trams will offer more than 30 percent greater capacity than current vehicles.
Aamulehti adds that Tampere currently operates 28 37-metre trams.
