Tampere Cracks Down on Phone and Headphone Use During Traffic Safety Week

The City of Tampere says phones, headphones and other smart devices are creating a growing safety problem for people of all ages in Tampere during Traffic Safety Week.

City officials say attention focused on screens or music weakens awareness of surroundings. That increases the risk that other road users, traffic signs or changing conditions go unnoticed, leading to near-misses or accidents. The campaign will reach Tampere schools with morning assemblies and short informational videos aimed especially at children and young people.

Tampere’s lead traffic engineer Heljä Aarnikko urged families to agree on rules at home: keep phones mainly in backpacks while moving, avoid using headphones where all senses are needed, and answer urgent messages only after stopping in a safe place. Aarnikko said adults should set the example. The week's activities are funded by the state-run Suomi liikkeelle programme.

It follows recent local initiatives to improve road safety, including an August traffic crackdown near schools that issued dozens of fines and a Scooter Safety Day earlier this month to teach young people e‑scooter rules and safety.
