Tampere MP Sari Tanus seeks 30% solar panel subsidy amid datacentre expansion
Tampere MP Sari Tanus proposes a state-funded 30% purchase subsidy for homeowners to install solar panels as datacentres expand, citing concerns about rising electricity costs after Google's investments.
Sari Tanus, the Christian Democrats MP who represents Tampere, is proposing a state-funded 30 percent purchase subsidy for homeowners to install solar panels as datacentres expand, following Google's announced investments. The subsidy would cover 30 percent of purchase costs.
Tanus welcomed the tech investments as a boost to Finland's economy but said citizens' concerns about higher power bills must be taken seriously. "We cannot afford any decisions based on gut feelings; precise calculations are needed on how to keep electricity affordable in the future," she said, and she urged the government to launch projects that enable households to help secure affordable power.
At present, homeowners only have the household deduction, which makes installation labor tax-deductible. She argues a direct purchase subsidy would speed uptake of clean energy and strengthen national preparedness and security by helping homes maintain power during crises and disruptions.
Tampere recently eased permits for balcony glazing and solar panels city permit changes, and there are examples of homeowners cutting household electricity use after pairing solar with modern heating systems a Tampere homeowner's successful upgrade.
