A Tampere homeowner halved annual household electricity use—from about 12,000 kWh to roughly 6,500 kWh—after replacing a 25‑year‑old ground‑source heat pump with a modern inverter-driven system integrated with rooftop solar.

Lämmöllä-lehti reports that Tampere resident Arto Timperi, who holds a PhD in engineering, replaced his more than 25-year-old ground-source heat pump with a modern inverter-driven system, integrating it with rooftop solar and cutting household electricity use to about 6,500 kWh in 2025.

Timperi said he made the decision proactively rather than waiting for a breakdown during cold weather. The original pump had run for decades with few problems, but he wanted to avoid an emergency failure that could disrupt the household during hard freezes. "I wanted to change the unit when it was still my decision, not because of a forced situation," he said.

The replacement followed a broad procurement process. Timperi requested offers from roughly 20 suppliers and evaluated references, the companies' financial health and planned maintenance services. He ultimately chose an inverter-controlled heat pump that emphasizes automation and remote monitoring — features he says have improved markedly compared with earlier generations.

New control capabilities let the system work seamlessly with the household's solar panels and respond to variable electricity prices. Better hot water management and flexible control options have noticeably improved everyday comfort and system adaptability.

Figures in the report show the household's annual electricity use fell from an average of about 12,000 kWh to roughly 6,500 kWh after the upgrade. The property's solar panels produce about 5,000 kWh per year, much of which is used on-site. The case underlines how component upgrades combined with system-level planning can significantly affect consumption.
