Tampere named first Nordic Tram City of the Year for rapid light‑rail rollout

On Tuesday, May 5 Tampere announced it had won the inaugural Nordic Tram City Award. The prize recognises leadership in developing tram and light‑rail systems as part of sustainable urban planning and was presented at the Tram Forum in Gothenburg.

The award, organised by the Nordic tram network Spårvagnsstäderna, highlights excellence, innovation and leadership across four categories: Nordic Tram City of the Year, Safe Tram, Women in the Nordic Tram Sector and Best Student Work. The Tram Forum is an industry gathering that has been held in Sweden since 2009.

Judges praised Tampere for the rapid rollout of its light‑rail network, strong operational performance and a clear focus on innovation and urban development. They also singled out the city’s Lyyli Living Lab platform, created to promote continuous learning and broad collaboration among operators, planners and researchers. Tampereen Raitiotie Oy’s development director Ville‑Mikael Tuominen accepted the award on the city’s behalf.

Mayor Ilmari Nurminen called the recognition “a fine acknowledgement of long‑term work to develop the tram system as part of sustainable urban growth” and said he was pleased the project’s tangible benefits for residents are visible beyond Finland. Tuominen described the win as “a pleasant surprise,” crediting Ratikka staff and partners and calling the award “a great thank‑you for everyone’s work.”

The Tram Forum has grown into a key meeting place for the Nordic tram sector. This year marked the first time the Nordic Tram Award was presented, part of a new effort to spotlight best practices in integrating trams into future‑oriented city planning.
