Tampere tram turns five, surpasses 79 million journeys

According to the City of Tampere, Tampere's tram system marked its fifth year of operation on Sunday, 9 August 2026, after carrying roughly 79 million trips since launch.

Ridership has climbed steadily, from nearly 10 million boardings in the first year to 20.6 million in the fifth. A single-day record of 82,474 boardings was set on the eve of Vappu 2026. The network runs 28 vehicles, posts a reliability rate of 99.88 percent and scores an average customer satisfaction of 4.5 on a 1–5 scale. “The tram has become an important part of daily life and the city’s growth,” Mayor Ilmari Nurminen said, while Nysse’s public transport director Mika Periviita highlighted how the tram has strengthened the whole public transport system.

The line was lengthened to Santalahti in 2023 and to Lentävänniemi in January 2025, growing the network from its original 17 kilometres to about 24 kilometres and increasing stops to 33 pairs. Plans are under way to extend service toward Linnainmaa and Suuppa in phased stages, with interim traffic to new terminal points targeted for August 2028 and further construction dependent on state support through 2032. The operator highlights fleet upgrades, including the 47-metre extended tram Valma, and an active art programme featuring 94 artists and 73 projects as part of the system’s wider appeal.

This work builds on earlier efforts to extend several stops to accommodate 47-metre trams announced in March and follows Nysse’s 2025 growth and service report confirming rising ridership.
