According to the City of Tampere, master planning has begun for the Messukylä and Ristinarkku districts in Tampere, covering roughly 40 hectares, and the project leaflet is on display until 22 October.
The work focuses on the Janka residential area in Ristinarkku and the blocks south of the railway in Messukylä.
Planners will study infill housing on both sides of the track while respecting the site’s constraints and existing land ownership. Residential and commercial plots are split between the city and private owners; streets and green areas are owned by the city, and the railway is state-owned.
The master plan will guide phased detailed zoning and take into account plans for a possible commuter train stop. Draft proposals will be put on display in winter 2026–2027, when the public can submit opinions and attend a consultation event.
The work follows the city's broader southern growth programme guiding development toward the south and earlier plans to free up land by relocating the shunting yard to enable denser, green housing.
Authorities aim for a transit-oriented, high-quality urban environment that balances new housing, business lots, parking needs and the continuity of Janka’s current residential character. Traffic arrangements, pedestrian and cycling connections, rail crossings, stormwater solutions and measures to protect nature values will also be examined.
