Tampere rail yard to close for three weekend shutdowns and five-week partial halt during overhaul
ePressi reports extensive track renewal work at the Tampere rail yard will require three full-weekend shutdowns and a five-week partial closure from 3 May, with noisy night-time work under the Erkkilä bridge expected to affect nearby residents.
ePressi reports that extensive track renewal works are planned at the Tampere rail yard south of the Erkkilä bridge this spring and summer, including three full-weekend shutdowns and a five-week partial closure beginning 3 May.
The project will renew the track substructure and superstructure, replace multiple switches, adjust turnout arrangements and carry out wide-ranging overhead line and safety-system upgrades. A new intermediate platform will also be built at Tampere railway station, measures officials say are intended to improve the yard’s operational capacity.
"Most of the track work linked to the rail yard renewal will be completed this year. We will work during three weekend-long total rail shutdowns and a five-week shutdown in which only some tracks are out of use," said project manager Jetro Matilainen of Väylävirasto. The full-weekend shutdowns are scheduled for 2–3 May, 9–10 May and 6–7 June. The longer interruption runs from 3 May at 22:40 until 7 June at 22:40.
Work under the Erkkilä bridge will continue during the first two weekend closures. Crews will dismantle a steel work platform and a support wall around an intermediate pier — operations that are expected to cause particularly loud night-time noise near the bridge. Ratapihankatu will be closed between the Naistenlahti junction and Väinölänkatu during the first weekend, from Saturday 2 May at 20:00 until Monday 4 May at 06:00.
The contractor Kreate Oy says track works will continue after the major closures into summer and autumn, but at a much smaller scale that should not affect train services.
Some daytime weekend trains between Tampere and Parkano, Tampere and Pori, Tampere and Seinäjoki, Tampere–Jyväskylä–Pieksämäki and Tampere and Kuopio will be replaced by buses, and night services will see adjustments and cancellations. VR will publish detailed timetables and replacement-bus departure points on its website. Residents in the impact area will be warned about noisy night-time work, and dust will be controlled by watering construction areas.
