Tampere Residents Demand Full-Size Indoor Football Facility
A resident initiative with about 2,200 signatures is urging Tampere to build a full-size indoor football training hall, saying existing winter options are unsuitable and practice slots are constantly overbooked.
Tamperelainen reports that a resident initiative with about 2,200 signatures is calling for Tampere to build a full-size indoor football training hall so players have a safe option for winter practice.
The initiative was submitted in early March and is backed by local football enthusiasts, including parents of youth players and people actively involved in various clubs. Its backers say the city must move from planning discussions to concrete action, arguing that a decision on how to implement the project is needed and quickly. Heikki Tapola, one of the initiative’s responsible persons, notes that the mayor’s programme talks about zoning for a site, but that planning alone is not enough.
According to the initiative, Tampere still lacks an indoor facility suitable for year-round football training. The Pirkkahalli is often used for exhibitions and events during winter, while Tammelastadium primarily serves match events rather than extensive training. Jalitsu is a pressure indoor hall maintained at club cost, with its service life nearing its end and not meeting growing participation numbers, the initiative states. Heated outdoor pitches in Kauppi and Vuores are also described as unreliable during winter due to snow, ice and cold. The initiative representatives add that winter practice slots are constantly overbooked, with it being typical for 8–12-year-olds’ sessions to start already at 15:45 because there are no other times, which they say is not sustainable for families’ everyday routines.
