Tampere will move the Hallilantie crosswalk east of the junction, build a central island and add a new sidewalk beside Ahlman School, the local paper Tamperelainen reported. The city has secured an easement on part of the Ahlman School Foundation's plot to allow construction of the sidewalk.
The changes support Tampere's wider plan to lower residential speed limits to 30 km/h. The aim is to introduce structural traffic-calming measures near schools and in areas where residents have requested calmer streets.
Property owners will be responsible for maintaining the new sidewalk. The city will handle winter upkeep for the crossing and for the existing combined pedestrian and bicycle path on the north side of Hallilantie. The council's decision allows work to begin before the measures are legally final.
