Tampere to Abolish 31 Municipal Job Tasks After Staff Negotiations
Tampere has concluded staff negotiations affecting about 220 municipal employees. The city will abolish 31 job tasks and offer affected staff alternative positions.
The talks affecting about 220 municipal employees ended on Monday; 31 existing job tasks will be abolished and staff will be offered alternative positions, YLE reported.
Human resources, finance, communications and marketing functions will be reorganised. HR and finance work will be centralised under the city’s corporate administration, and communications and marketing will move into corporate administration and service areas. Niina Pietikäinen, the city's HR director, said the aim is to boost effectiveness rather than trigger immediate cuts. She added the city still needs people for large IT projects. Layoffs remain possible if employees decline the posts offered.
The changes take effect early next year and are part of Tampere’s wider financial balance programme, following a summer review that raised the city's forecast deficit to €54.4 million and earlier projections of a €46.5 million shortfall for 2027. Mayor Ilmari Nurminen presented a draft 2026 budget on Monday showing a deficit of more than €40 million and planned adjustments totalling over €10 million.
