Tampere Falls to 14th in National Life-Satisfaction Survey

A Kuntarahoitus survey carried out in July–August 2026 places Tampere 14th among Finland's largest cities for residents' life satisfaction. Ninety-three percent of respondents said nature is very or fairly important to their happiness.

Unlike the long-running Vetovoima & Pitovoima studies that often put Tampere near the top, this life-satisfaction measure ranks Turku, Espoo, Helsinki and Vantaa ahead. Respondents most often rated freedom to make personal choices, health and a sense of security as very or fairly important to happiness.

Norstat Finland conducted the poll for Kuntarahoitus, collecting responses from 2,038 people across all 18 mainland regions. The survey adapted the United Nations' basic happiness question to measure life satisfaction rather than indicators such as migration appeal or economic pull.

The result contrasts with other recent rankings that placed Tampere at or near the top, including the Reputation and Trust Analytics study that named Tampere Finland's most attractive region and an EKK downtown vitality ranking that placed Tampere first.
