Tampere tram operator requires consent for work near tracks
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy says anyone planning work near tram tracks must apply for consent via the operator's website; work within 1.5 metres of live overhead wires is only allowed during planned power cuts.
Tampereen Raitiotie Oy said applications for consent must be submitted via the Tampereen Ratikka website and will be attached to the city's street permit under an agreement with the city. Any work within 1.5 metres of live parts of the overhead contact wires can only proceed after a planned power cut.
"Overhead contact wire voltages are life-threatening," said Markus Seppälä, a safety expert at Tampereen Raitiotie Oy. He urged contractors and other operators to notify the operator in advance and to contact it early for guidance on safety arrangements.
Logistics planners were reminded that the overhead contact wires are normally hung so vehicles up to five metres tall can pass beneath them. The operator must be consulted for special transports exceeding five metres, and transports taller than 4.4 metres require a special transport permit from Elinvoimakeskus.
Work to extend the tram network is under way. Overhead contact wire installation has begun on the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa extension. Fittings were installed this summer on Hatanpään valtatie between the bus station and Tampereen valtatie, and the wires are expected to cross the Tampereen valtatie intersection by the end of the year. This follows night-time installation work on Hatanpään valtatie earlier this summer. Installation work in Härmälä on Nuolialantie is due to start in autumn 2026.
