Tampere University appoints Tiina Silander as education vice-rector, renews Tapio Visakorpi for research
Tampere University has appointed Tiina Silander as vice‑rector for education and reappointed Tapio Visakorpi as vice‑rector for research, both on five‑year terms starting next year and running until the end of 2031.
The Tampere Higher Education Foundation board approved the appointments at its Wednesday meeting, Aamulehti reported. Tiina Silander will serve as vice‑rector for education and Tapio Visakorpi will continue as vice‑rector for research, both on five-year terms beginning next year and running until the end of 2031.
The university cited Silander's broad knowledge of the academic environment and higher education policy, along with her leadership experience in multidisciplinary organisations and networks across education levels. It highlighted Visakorpi's deep understanding of the research and science policy landscape and his track record leading research organisations.
Rector Keijo Hämäläinen praised the applicant pool as excellent and said the pair bring complementary expertise, solid leadership experience and strategic vision.
Visakorpi is a professor of cancer genetics and has held the research vice-rector role since 2022. Silander moves from her position as dean of the Faculty of Education and Culture; she has also worked at the Ministry of Education and Culture and led the teacher education institute at the University of Jyväskylä.
Long-serving education vice-rector Merja Sutela left earlier this year to become rector-CEO at Lapland University of Applied Sciences.
