Tampereen Tyttöjen Talo wins Plan International Finland Girl Award for grassroots work
Tampereen Tyttöjen Talo in central Tampere has won Plan International Finland's Girl Award for its grassroots work supporting girls and young women.
"Here the girls' voices are heard," director Oili Ollila said after Tampereen Tyttöjen Talo in central Tampere was named this year's winner of Plan International Finland's Girl Award on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old drop-in centre serves girls and young women who identify as female, aged 12–29, and offers free, low-threshold support. It is run by Setlementti Tampere ry at Pyhäjärvenkatu 1.
Jury chair and sexologist Joonas Pesonen praised the organisation's grassroots work at a time of rising youth distress and cuts to services.
Staff say the centre handles new cases of sexual violence every week and hears growing concerns about misogyny, racism and poverty. Many visitors describe the space as a second home, where a single caring adult can make a decisive difference.
The award, presented for the third time, was chosen from 112 nominations representing 51 candidates. The final trio included director Shakiba Adil and podcast producer and author Saara Nurmo, and the jury highlighted local, girl-focused action and interventions that support young people's wellbeing when selecting the winner.
