Lastenkirjainstituutti wins Pirkanmaa Reading Achievement award, to host Tampere Day open house
Lastenkirjainstituutti was named Pirkanmaa's Reading Achievement of the Year and will host an open house at the Puutarhakatu library on Tampere Day, 3 October.
Pirkanmaa libraries named Lastenkirjainstituutti the Reading Achievement of the Year on PIKI Day, 24 September, the City of Tampere said.
The institute supports professionals, enthusiasts and the media in matters of children’s and youth literature. It maintains Finland’s only specialist library for that field, monitors literary trends and organises trainings and expert meetings. Executive director Kaisa Laaksonen described the award as an important recognition and said she hopes it will draw more Tampere residents to the Puutarhakatu library to rediscover childhood book treasures. The institute will hold an open house on Tampere Day, 3 October, from 11:00 to 14:00.
The PIKI network's leadership chose the winner from about 30 nominations submitted by library customers, both in branches and via the PIKI online library. Since 2021, the award has highlighted literacy work and thanked contributors. It can go to any non-library actor that has promoted reading in Pirkanmaa during the past year or over a longer period.
The award follows Tampere taking a strengthened role in the PIKI network earlier this year Tampere's new role in the PIKI network and comes amid local efforts to promote reading after Finland's recent PISA results the Tampere push following PISA 2025.
