Tampere’s Anti‑Racism Week highlights safety and new racism‑reporting channel
Tampere is marking Anti‑Racism Week from 16 to 22 March with a programme focused on safety and inclusion.
The week highlights local work to promote equality and to combat racism and discrimination.
City officials, including non-discrimination coordinator Mikko Ala-Kapee, emphasise the need for clear prohibitions and practical ways to intervene, while also promoting encounters between people from different backgrounds. Mayor Ilmari Nurminen, patron of the week, says Tampere “does not tolerate racism” and wants everyone to feel accepted and safe.
Highlights include a Monday “Sauna for Everyone” conversation about making Tampere’s sauna culture more accessible. Later in the week, a residents’ evening in Hervanta will showcase and discuss a new channel for reporting racism, due to launch this summer. The programme also features family activities, author talks at Sampola Library, a Spring Bazaar at Culture House Laikku and a closing panel with a joint Eid celebration at Artteli Community House. All city events are free, open to everyone and adhere to safer-space principles.
