Under 100 damage reports in Tampere after weekend downpour

Tampere received fewer than 100 public reports after last weekend’s intense downpour, figures reported by Aamulehti show. City stormwater expert Juho Korkalainen said he checked numbers with Tampereen Vesi, Tampereen Infra and the city service point and found roughly 70 percent of the notifications point to unique locations. More reports may arrive later. About 60 emergency calls were logged across Pirkanmaa, rescue department updates show. The heaviest flooding appeared in the city centre where sewer capacity was exceeded, with stormwater carrying sediment and branches that temporarily clogged drains and ditches. Damage reports include erosion on gravel streets and sediment runoff from construction sites, and Korkinmäki’s Suutalankatu was cited as a case where erosion protection was still missing.
Korkalainen said timing and preventive work helped limit harm. Vegetation in full growth and a preceding dry spell held soils together. The city has prepared plans for each of its ten main catchment areas and built retention solutions such as the Nallenpuisto basin and the Huhmarpelto flood meadow. Tampereen Infra’s tree expert Piritta Karru said fallen branches and trees were reported mainly from the centre and east of the city, but overall volumes are small. Measurement alarms at wastewater pumping stations briefly crossed thresholds, she said, yet no large-scale overflows or major catastrophe have been detected. Overall costs are not yet known.
The episode follows heavy summer downpours that recently collapsed an asphalt road in Somero and washed out gravel stretches in Pirkanmaa last week's deluge.
