YLE reports that UPM Energy will invest over €20 million to modernize Tyrvään hydroelectric plant in Sastamala at Hartolankoski on Lake Liekovesi. The upgrades aim to extend the plant's life and enhance its ability to generate balancing hydro power for the grid. In a press release, UPM Energy says the project will refurbish turbine-generator units and install a new emergency power automation system to improve dam safety, with completion expected by the end of 2030. Tyrvään power station began operating in 1950 and is part of UPM Energy, the group's independent business unit. Hydroelectric power plays a significant role in balancing renewable energy, providing electricity when wind or solar production fluctuates.
