City clears way to demolish iconic Tampere club wing at Puutarhakatu 21
Tampere has approved a zoning proposal that clears the way to demolish the two-storey party wing at Puutarhakatu 21. The plan would replace it with a six-storey building while protecting and raising the taller block.
The approved plan clears the way to demolish the two-storey party wing at Puutarhakatu 21, a building that has housed clubs for nearly six decades. It applies to the block at Näsilinnankatu 22 in central Tampere and follows earlier drafts earlier draft plan and a later review September review that flagged the possible partial demolition.
Under the proposal, the taller section of the existing block would be protected and allowed to be raised by two floors. The low, two-storey restaurant wing on Puutarhakatu would be replaced by a new six-storey building, with the possibility of a sauna in the attic. Parking would be moved to basement levels and beneath a deck, while residents' outdoor areas would be arranged on top of that deck.
The participation and assessment plan and reference designs were first displayed in early 2019. The scheme was later revised after it was judged unprofitable and following feedback and changes to the applicant's objectives. Early commenters criticised the proposed height increases, the placement of new buildings and the site's cultural significance; they asked for lower new construction, retained driveway access to the neighbouring lot and shared parking and waste arrangements for housing companies.
The zoning proposal now moves to the city board and, once implementation agreements are settled, on to the city council for final approval. Local paper Tamperelainen covered the earlier stages of the process.
