Iconic Tampere Party House on Puutarhakatu May Be Partly Demolished

A famous two-storey party house at Puutarhakatu 21 in central Tampere faces possible demolition. Tamperelainen reports the city planning committee will discuss a zoning proposal next Wednesday that could clear the site for new construction.

The building has hosted clubs including L.A. Garage, Panama, Onnela, Pulse, Tivoli, Tenderville and Twenty One over nearly six decades; it currently houses Viihdekeskus Crazy. Under the draft zoning plan the taller part of the existing complex would be protected and may be raised by two floors, while the low two-storey restaurant wing along Puutarhakatu would be removed and potentially replaced by a six-storey block with an attic sauna.

Parking for the plot would be placed at basement level and beneath a deck, with residents' outdoor space organised on the deck. Planners note the first participation and assessment materials were shown in early 2019, after which the scheme was reshaped when the original layout proved unviable and the applicant altered its goals. Early feedback criticised raising the old building, the siting of new volumes and stressed the site's cultural value, asking for low new construction, preservation of a driveway to the neighbouring lot and shared parking and waste arrangements for housing companies. If the proposal is put on public display and the required implementation agreements are approved, the plan will proceed to the city board and then to the city council for final approval.
